Answer a few quick questions to see if you may qualify for Wegovy
These are commonly considered "weight-related conditions" for eligibility purposes.
What BMI Do You Need for Wegovy?
Wegovy is FDA-indicated for adults with obesity (BMI 30+) or adults with overweight (BMI 27-29.9) plus at least one weight-related comorbid condition such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes, or dyslipidemia.
In practice, this means: if your BMI is 30 or higher, that alone typically meets the indication. If your BMI is between 27 and 29.9, you'll generally need a qualifying weight-related condition.
These same criteria apply whether you're seeing your primary care doctor, an endocrinologist, or using a telehealth platform.
Note: This page focuses on adult criteria. Wegovy is also FDA-approved for pediatric patients aged 12+ with obesity—criteria differ, so consult a clinician for pediatric use.
What Conditions Help You Qualify?
If your BMI is between 27 and 29.9, you may qualify with one of these weight-related conditions:
High blood pressure
Most common qualifying condition
High cholesterol
Including high LDL or low HDL
Type 2 diabetes
GLP-1s were originally developed for diabetes
Sleep apnea
Strongly linked to weight
Cardiovascular disease
Heart disease, prior heart attack, or stroke
Note: Having one of these conditions doesn't guarantee insurance coverage—it's a clinical eligibility criterion, not an insurance criterion. Your insurer may have additional requirements.
What If My BMI Is Between 27 and 30?
This is the "gray zone" where eligibility depends on having a weight-related condition.
If you have a condition
You likely meet clinical criteria. Bring documentation of your diagnosis (medications you take, recent lab work, etc.) to your appointment.
If you don't have a documented condition
Most insurers and clinical guidelines won't consider you eligible. However, you may have a condition you don't know about—many people discover high blood pressure or prediabetes during routine checkups.
