One. On December 22, 2025, the FDA approved the Wegovy pill — the first oral GLP-1 specifically approved for weight loss in adults. It launched in U.S. pharmacies on January 5, 2026. Two. On April 1, 2026, the FDA approved Foundayo (orforglipron) — Eli Lilly's once-daily oral GLP-1, and the first non-peptide GLP-1 pill. Lilly began shipping it via LillyDirect on April 6, 2026. Here's the one thing about the Wegovy pill that's not in the ad.
The morning routine is brutal. First thing after you wake up. Empty stomach. No more than 4 oz of plain water. Wait at least 30 minutes before you eat anything, drink anything else, or take any other oral medication. That includes coffee. That includes your thyroid pill. That includes your vitamins.
If you don't follow that routine, the pill doesn't absorb the way it's designed to. The drug has a special coating (called SNAC) that protects semaglutide from your stomach acid long enough to be absorbed. Eating or drinking something other than a small sip of plain water in that window can disrupt absorption.
Foundayo skips that constraint: Lilly says it can be taken any time of day without food or water restrictions. It's a different kind of molecule (a small-molecule, non-peptide GLP-1 receptor agonist) that holds up better in the digestive system, so it doesn't need the empty-stomach trick.

Which GLP-1 pills are FDA-approved for weight loss?

Is Rybelsus a GLP-1 weight-loss pill?
No. Rybelsus is an oral semaglutide tablet, but its FDA-approved use is for adults with type 2 diabetes — not weight management. The doses are lower than the Wegovy pill (Rybelsus goes up to 14 mg; the Wegovy pill goes up to 25 mg). If you're searching for a weight-loss pill, Rybelsus is not the answer here.
What about compounded oral GLP-1 pills, drops, and lozenges?
Some compounded oral or sublingual products are marketed as semaglutide or tirzepatide, but they are not FDA-approved finished products. Non-oral birth control isn't affected

If you have PCOS
GLP-1s are not FDA-approved to treat PCOS. Some clinicians prescribe them off-label when weight loss and insulin sensitivity are part of an individual treatment plan. Don't frame a GLP-1 pill as a PCOS treatment — frame it as a weight-management option that your clinician may consider alongside your broader PCOS care. Postmenopause (typically 55+)

Standalone answer: Neither Wegovy pill nor Foundayo is appropriate for everyone. The hard FDA contraindications for both are a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), a diagnosis of Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2), or a known serious hypersensitivity to the medication.

Do not take Wegovy pill or Foundayo if:
- You or a close family member has medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), or
- You have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2), or
- You've had a serious allergic reaction to semaglutide (Wegovy pill) or orforglipron (Foundayo).
Conditions that require a clinical conversation (not automatic exclusion)
- History of pancreatitis
- History of gallbladder disease
- Severe gastroparesis or other GI motility disorders
- Severe kidney disease
- Active eating disorders (bulimia, anorexia)
- Type 1 diabetes
- Pregnancy or planning pregnancy in the near term
- Currently breastfeeding
- Upcoming surgery requiring general anesthesia
When to call your prescriber immediately
- Severe, persistent abdominal pain (especially upper-belly pain radiating to your back)
- Severe ongoing vomiting that won't stop
- Signs of dehydration (no urination, dizziness, severe weakness)
- A lump or swelling in your neck, hoarseness, or trouble swallowing
- Sudden vision changes
- Signs of a serious allergic reaction (severe rash, swelling of face/tongue, trouble breathing)

Is there a GLP-1 pill for weight loss for women?
Yes. Two FDA-approved GLP-1 pills are indicated for chronic weight management in adults, including women: the Wegovy® pill (oral semaglutide), approved December 22, 2025, and Foundayo™ (orforglipron), approved April 1, 2026. Both are once-daily oral tablets.
What is the best GLP-1 pill for women?
For most women, Foundayo is the easier pill to take consistently because it has no food, water, or timing restrictions. For women who can keep a strict empty-stomach morning routine and want the strongest weight-loss data plus a cardiovascular benefit, the Wegovy pill is the stronger choice.
Wegovy pill vs Foundayo — which is better?
Both produce double-digit average weight loss. The Wegovy pill has stronger top-end data (FDA Study 7 reports 27.9% of patients on 25 mg lost ≥20% of body weight) and an FDA-approved cardiovascular benefit. Foundayo is meaningfully easier to live with — once daily, any time, with or without food. The right pick depends on your morning routine and birth-control method.
Does the GLP-1 pill affect birth control?
Foundayo can reduce the effectiveness of oral birth control pills because it slows stomach emptying. Eli Lilly's prescribing information instructs women to switch to a non-oral contraceptive method or add a barrier method for 30 days after starting Foundayo and for 30 days after each dose increase. The Wegovy pill's labeling does not include this specific warning.
Can you take a GLP-1 pill while breastfeeding?
Both Wegovy pill and Foundayo are not recommended while breastfeeding. Talk to your OB-GYN if you're nursing and considering a GLP-1.
Is Rybelsus the same as the Wegovy pill?
Both contain semaglutide, but Rybelsus is FDA-approved only for type 2 diabetes, at lower doses (up to 14 mg). The Wegovy pill is approved specifically for weight management at higher doses (up to 25 mg). They are not interchangeable for weight loss.
How much does the Wegovy pill cost for women without insurance?
Under Novo Nordisk's current self-pay program, the Wegovy pill costs $149/month for the 1.5 mg and 4 mg starter doses, with the 4 mg offer available until August 31, 2026, then $199/month. The 9 mg and 25 mg doses cost $299/month. Telehealth membership fees are separate.
How much does Foundayo cost without insurance?
Under Eli Lilly's Self Pay Journey Program / Savings Card through December 31, 2026, Foundayo costs $149/month for 0.8 mg, $199/month for 2.5 mg, and $299/month for 5.5, 9, 14.5, and 17.2 mg when refills are placed within 45 days. Regular pricing of $349/month applies for 14.5 mg and 17.2 mg if a refill is delayed.
What is the easiest GLP-1 pill to take?
Foundayo. It is the only FDA-approved oral GLP-1 that can be taken once daily at any time of day, with or without food, and with no water restriction.
Do GLP-1 pills work as well as the injections?
The gap is small. The Wegovy pill at 25 mg produced about 13.6% average weight loss over 64 weeks; the Wegovy injection at 2.4 mg produced about 15% over 68 weeks. Tirzepatide injection (Zepbound) produces the largest weight loss of any GLP-1 (around 22.5% at the top dose). For women who wouldn't take an injection at all, a pill they'll actually take is the better tool.
Are compounded oral GLP-1 pills FDA-approved?
No. Compounded drugs are not FDA-approved, and the FDA does not verify their safety, effectiveness, or quality. They are a separate category from the FDA-approved Wegovy pill and Foundayo.
How long do I have to take a GLP-1 pill?
Obesity is now treated as a chronic condition by most clinicians, similar to high blood pressure. Many women stay on GLP-1 medication long-term to maintain weight loss. Weight regain after stopping is common in published data. Your prescriber will help you make a long-term plan.
Will I lose my hair on a GLP-1 pill?
Some women report increased hair shedding during rapid weight loss on any GLP-1. Adequate protein intake (typically 80–100+ grams per day for active adults), strength training, and slower titration can help. If hair shedding is significant, talk to your prescriber — it may be related to weight-loss pace rather than the medication itself.
